The Aero Skills Competition rolled into Charlotte this past weekend while schools and industry rally to send their best people to compete at this unique venue. For the Junior or trade students’ class, there were nine students from three schools competing at Charlotte: Broward College, from Ft Lauderdale, FL; AIM from Virginia Beach, VA; and Greenville Technical College, from Greenville, SC.

Event designer and coordinator, Jay Logie said, “It’s great to see the response we had for our first event in Charlotte, North Carolina and a first with NASCAR, this is a perfect venue to show the public at large what aircraft trades people do for a living. Set in an industry emulated format and to engaging an audience, with the noise and activity got many peoples attention throughout the two days!”

For the Aircraft Structures (or sheet metal as some like to call it) Top Gun competition, where the competitors were required to fabricate and build their sheet metal project; riveting it together head to head, in front of an audience. Finalists had to disassemble and then reassemble (re-rivet) again for final points.

For the Exhibition Team competition, Junior and Senior competitors were randomly matched up to compete in four events that included Rivet Shoot; Clean Cut, making a precise cut in a skin; Rivet Removal, removing rivets they put in; and Around the Corner, removing rivets in awkward locations. The winners were determined based on the quality of their work and their time for completion.
